Steps to Become a School and Guidance Counselor
Here are some common steps people can take to become a school or guidance counselor.

Complete A Bachelor’s Degree in A Behavioral, Social Science, or Education Field
With a bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, psychology, social work, or a similar field, you are prepared to explore the dynamics of helping professions and students, including mental health foundations, educational systems, learning theories, and student services. You should, however, check the admission requirements for the masters in counseling programs that interest you before applying.

Earn A Master’s Degree in School Counseling
An accredited university’s master’s degree in school counseling is a requirement for any career as a school counselor. The courses in these programs typically include counseling theories, learning and behavior disorders, and human development.
In the field of school counseling, the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP) is widely regarded as the most reputable accreditor, as it ensures coursework meets all required requirements and standards. Since not all states require CACREP-accredited programs, it is best to check if your state requires one. Additionally, some states may require you to complete an accredited program.

Complete An Internship as Part Of The Certification/Licensure Process
Your master’s degree in school counseling program will require you to complete a supervised internship in a school under the supervision of a certified/licensed school counselor. The CACREP program requires students to complete a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship, though you should check with your state board to determine the required number of hours. The experience allows you to dive deep into your work with students, which prepares you for postgraduate employment.

Pass Any Required Exams for Certification/Licensure
A state’s licensing requirements will determine if you must pass examinations in order to practice. You can find more information about your state’s requirements by consulting your state’s website.

Apply For Certification/Licensure
The state licensing or certification process begins after you pass the required exams and meet any additional state requirements. Before applying, be sure to review your state’s application requirements.
